Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
