One Piece Concludes a 27-Year Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and featured dozens of filler arcs. Starting in the new year, after the current storyline concludes, the animated series will go on a quarterly break until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will release two seasons every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The series anime previously took a six-month break that started in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and allow the manga to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments appeared during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the news, this may result in a single installment of the series covering one chapter, with some alternatively handling one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for scheduling.

It's the end of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
