EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
